Apple-Date Bars
makes 18 bars

5 tablespoons butter, plus extra for the pan
2/3 cup (packed) brown sugar
1 large egg
3 tablespoons 2% milk
1/2 cup peeled and chopped apple (1 medium)
1 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 cup walnut pieces
1/2 cup pitted and chopped dried dates

1. Preheat the oven to 350F. Butter a 9x12-inch pan.
2. Cream the butter and brown sugar in a large mixing bowl. Mix in the egg and milk. Stir in the apple.
3. Add the flour, baking soda, and spices, and mix thoroughly. Stir in the nuts and dates.
4. Spread the dough onto the greased pan and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until firm to the touch.
5. Remove from the oven and allow to cool for 10 minutes before cutting in 18 (2x3-inch) pieces.
