Recipe from Barbara Kafka

The Brown Betty is a classic dessert that requires minimum prep. Put it together, stick it in the oven, and you have a sweet ending to a meal.

This recipe is part of The Barbara Kafka Dessert Anthology.

ingredients

4 tart apples (Granny Smith)
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon grated nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
3 cups breadcrumbs, made from about eight slices white bread, lightly toasted
1/4 pound unsalted butter, cut into thin slices

timer

prep: 15 minutes
total: 1 hour

tools

8 1/2-inch baking pan

instructions

1. Preheat the oven to 375F.

2. Peel and core the apples. Cut them into slices 1/8-inch thick. Mix together the sugar and spices.

3. Butter an 8 1/2-inch square baking pan. Make layers as follows: 1/3 of the crumbs (1 cup), 1/3 of the apples, 1/3 of the spice mixture, 1/3 of the butter. Repeat twice until all the ingredients are used up.

4. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-45 minutes, or until the apples are soft and the top is browned. Serve hot or warm with vanilla ice cream and ginger whipped cream.
